Creativity, Action, Service
CAS is the framework for
experiential learning at the core of the IB Diploma Programme. Designed to
involve students in new roles, and then reflecting on these experiences over
time, CAS uses challenging activities as an opportunity to develop a
student. The emphasis is on learning by doing real tasks that have real
consequences, and undergoing a personal journey of self-discovery that is
both challenging and enjoyable. CAS counterbalances the academic focus of
the rest of the IB Diploma Programme.
A key value of a CAS activity is that it uses challenging tasks as
opportunities to grow as a person through moving outside of a personal
comfort zone. In this regard, camping in the jungle, climbing a difficult
mountain, giving a musical performance in front of a large audience for the
first time or working with the residents of a home for the mentally and
physically disabled, are all in keeping with the spirit of CAS.
Creativity covers a range of arts activities such as doing dance,
theatre, music and art. It can also be interpreted to include creative
thinking in the design and carrying out of projects.
Action includes participation in expeditions, individual and team
sports, and physical activities outside the normal curriculum. Action may
also involve participation in activities that require physical exertion, for
example laying bricks in helping to build a school in a village.
Service involves an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning
benefit for the student. Service activities should not only be doing things
for others but also doing things with others and developing a real
commitment to them in a way that shows respect for the dignity of the
others. Service activities involve interaction and building links with
individuals or groups in the community, which may be the school, groups
within the Singapore community or an overseas community.
Students need to document their activities and provide evidence that have
achieved the required eight learning outcomes:
1. increased their awareness of their own strengths and limitations
2. undertaken new challenges
3. planned and initiated activities
4. worked collaboratively with others
5. shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
6. engaged with issues of global importance
7. considered the ethical implications of their actions
8. developed new skills
