St. Joseph's Institution International Senior School

Welcome to our vibrant, growing community - SJI International Senior School!

SJI International is a not-for-profit school that draws from the ethos and best practices of St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) – a school with a tradition of over 155 years of educational excellence in Singapore, established by the Catholic order of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. It is an international school connected to the Singapore community, with a richly diverse student population drawn from varied nationalities, culture and faiths interacting and learning together with Singaporean youths.

Providing Grades 11-12 section of St Joseph’s Institution International, SJII Senior School offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which provides an intellectually stimulating and holistic educational experience that is highly respected and recognized for admission by top universities around the world. We also have an active scholarship programme that draws outstanding students, enriching the school community, while fulfilling the Lasallian ethos of preference for the poor.

Interactions, learning and growth are driven by the values of Spirituality, Mutual Respect, Internationalism, Leadership, Experiences and Service. Students develop through Active Learning where their minds and interests are actively engaged, and taught by a team of dedicated teachers, many of whom have substantial experience in top schools around the world.

At the same time, values, education and character building are achieved through a range of challenging activities in sports, adventure and creativity, with a special emphasis on service: featuring weekly service activities and overseas projects that help students connect with and serve the local and global community. Challenge Week – a highlight of the Senior School programme – requires students to plan and undertake in small groups an independent journey in a regional country incorporating service and action activities that take them beyond their personal comfort zones.

SJII Senior School prepares young men and women in the school for the 21st Century world as thinking and caring global citizens who are at the same time connected to their community, faith and values.

We welcome you to the SJI International community.
Creativity, Action, Service

CAS is the framework for experiential learning at the core of the IB Diploma Programme. Designed to involve students in new roles, and then reflecting on these experiences over time, CAS uses challenging activities as an opportunity to develop a student. The emphasis is on learning by doing real tasks that have real consequences, and undergoing a personal journey of self-discovery that is both challenging and enjoyable. CAS counterbalances the academic focus of the rest of the IB Diploma Programme.

A key value of a CAS activity is that it uses challenging tasks as opportunities to grow as a person through moving outside of a personal comfort zone. In this regard, camping in the jungle, climbing a difficult mountain, giving a musical performance in front of a large audience for the first time or working with the residents of a home for the mentally and physically disabled, are all in keeping with the spirit of CAS.

Creativity covers a range of arts activities such as doing dance, theatre, music and art. It can also be interpreted to include creative thinking in the design and carrying out of projects.
Action
includes participation in expeditions, individual and team sports, and physical activities outside the normal curriculum. Action may also involve participation in activities that require physical exertion, for example laying bricks in helping to build a school in a village.
Service
involves an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. Service activities should not only be doing things for others but also doing things with others and developing a real commitment to them in a way that shows respect for the dignity of the others. Service activities involve interaction and building links with individuals or groups in the community, which may be the school, groups within the Singapore community or an overseas community.

Students need to document their activities and provide evidence that have achieved the required eight learning outcomes:

1. increased their awareness of their own strengths and limitations
2. undertaken new challenges
3. planned and initiated activities
4. worked collaboratively with others
5. shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
6. engaged with issues of global importance
7. considered the ethical implications of their actions
8. developed new skills
